Hunting and fishing are as fundamentally American as apple pie and the Star-Spangled Banner. Thus, it is surprising and a bit unnerving that many feel the need to protect these traditions from those who would encroach on this time-honored pastime.

But that’s exactly what Florida voters will face in the rapidly approaching November election.

On the state ballot is Amendment 2, a proposed amendment “to preserve forever fishing and hunting, including by the use of traditional methods, as a public right and preferred means of responsibly managing and controlling fish and wildlife. Species that the amendment does not limit the authority granted to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under Section 9 of Article IV of the State Constitution.”

Simply put, the amendment would protect fishing and hunting from radicals who would like nothing more than to severely limit or outright ban these traditional practices.

Yes, both are legal in Florida. But it is wise to foretell what is coming and take cautionary steps to avoid an issue down the road.

And the Sunshine State would join 23 of its brethren in enshrining these rights for future generations to enjoy.

The FWC governs hunting and fishing in Florida, and its duties include granting licenses and determining the seasons. Amendment 2 explicitly declares that its passage would not limit the governing body’s authority to perform its necessary functions.

Some critics worry about using large nets to harvest fish from state waters, but FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto defended the proposal in a September statement.

He explained that Amendment 2 “does not change or alter the existing net ban or the ability for it to be enforced.” Barreto further noted that the State Constitution already protects the net ban.

Florida voters will approve or reject the proposal in the general election on November 5.
