A man described by law enforcement as a “dangerous and brazen individual” is no more after an alleged attempted burglary in Florida early Sunday morning.
The Hillsborough County residence was apparently targeted by the unnamed suspect just after midnight. The call to emergency services was logged at 12:24 a.m.
The caller described having an unknown person breaking into the home. But the suspect did not get far, and responding officers found him already dead from multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived.
They then learned that the homeowner’s adult son stepped up and shot the alleged burglar when he gained entry into the residence.
Sheriff Chad Chronister spoke of the terrifying situation faced by the family.
“Imagine the fear of being awoken in the middle of the night by a stranger invading your home,” the sheriff declared. “This is every homeowner’s greatest fear, a dangerous and brazen individual breaking in, showing a complete disregard for the safety and security of others. Our thoughts are with this family as they recover from the trauma of the event.”
According to the latest report, the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed. Nor will they be as long as the facts of the case as initially reported hold true, as this is about as clear-cut of a situation of justified self-defense as could be imagined.
Sheriff Chronister was right. There are very few scenarios as frightening as being in bed asleep in your family home, only to be awakened by the unmistakable sound of a violent criminal breaking in.
At that point, the Second Amendment is very likely the only thing standing between escaping the threat unscathed and becoming just another statistic. For this Florida family, it is fortunate that the adult son was alert and prepared with access to a loaded firearm.
