As loud voices all across the political landscape warned of doom and gloom if their side did not prevail, one constant in the U.S. remained strong: The voters are all in for exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, and the drive for self-defense has never been stronger.
How much so? The latest adjusted figures for October 2024 showed the 63rd consecutive month during which there were over one million instant background checks for firearm purchases.
The FBI reported a whopping 2,374,172 during the first full month of fall.
However, some states require concealed carry permit holders and others to undergo monthly background checks, which skews the numbers upward. With this in mind, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade association, sifts through the numbers to approximate the actual number of retail gun sales.
The group determined that there were 1,302,857 National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks last month. This means citizens continue their robust push to arm themselves for everything from sport shooting to defending their families.
The NSSF does not account for the 24 states that allow a qualified alternative permit. Under the Brady Act, this gives the permit holder the right to purchase a weapon from a licensed dealer without submitting to an additional check.
The NSSF subtracts NICS purpose code permit checks, permit checks for CCW applicants, and other actions by states that alter the data.
The result of this research is clear: The American public chooses to exercise its constitutional freedoms despite naysayers who blame the right to keep and bear arms for every societal ill.
As many have noted, actions speak far louder than mere words. Good citizens’ actions show exactly where they stand on the raging gun control debate.
