Halloween should be an occasion for the youngsters to trick-or-treat and for adults to revel in the holiday. Unfortunately for some in Louisiana, the scares were genuine this year, and only the presence of a firearm likely saved lives from a rampaging attacker.

Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies responded to two separate home invasions at around 6:00 p.m., and the alleged intruder was only stopped by a gunshot at the second residence. Both homes were located on Dolphin Street.

Investigators believe 47-year-old Casey Meaux of Lafayette attacked an individual in the first home with a knife before moving on to the next target. But the next home presented a far different situation.

Meaux reportedly stabbed a second victim at the residence but was confronted by an armed citizen there. It is unclear whether the person he cut there was the same person who shot him in the chest.

Meaux and victims from each home were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect was then arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of home invasion.

Investigators have yet to determine a motive, and further charges may be pending. There was no immediate word on the conditions of the two victims.

This frightening scenario was made even more bizarre by its occurrence on Halloween, a night when many go from house to house dressed in outlandish costumes seeking candy and delighting the neighborhood. It had to be truly frightening and perhaps even confusing to encounter a knife-wielding suspect at such a time.

Thankfully, the second homeowner had a weapon to defend themselves against an obviously deranged individual. The night could easily have turned tragic without the presence of a weapon, and lives may have been saved by the defensive use of potentially lethal force.
