As causes of death go, being fatally shot in the groin ranks right up there with the worst imaginable. Unfortunately for an Alabama man, that was the outcome of an alleged attack last week.
The Enterprise Police Department was called out to the chaotic scene just after 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Arriving officers found two injured parties, one suffering from an apparent blunt instrument attack and the other from a severe gunshot wound.
Investigators now believe that Patrick John Cerqua, 59, attacked an unidentified individual with a metal pipe. That man suffered a head injury but was able to respond with lethal force.
Cerqua sustained a gunshot wound to the pelvic area, and first responders determined he was dead at the scene. The Coffee County coroner identified the dead man.
According to witnesses, a verbal altercation quickly escalated when the soon-to-be-deceased suspect struck the victim with the pipe. As he was being attacked, the victim was able to produce a weapon and fire a single shot.
The round had its intended effect, and the apparent assault ended immediately.
The man who was struck by the metal pipe is expected to recover from his head injury. He was not identified, and charges were not immediately filed as officials continued to investigate the lethal encounter.
A metal pipe is undoubtedly a deadly weapon, and the victim had every reason to fear for his life when he was attacked. For his sake, it is fortunate that he was armed and prepared to defend himself in the violent assault.
The loss of life is unfortunate, but that is a risk inherent to striking another person with a blunt object. If the blow to the head were not made, there would have been no justification for firing the shot.
