A man accused of following a Texas woman home and then breaking into her residence found out the hard way that a loaded firearm is indeed the “great equalizer.”
The DeSoto woman told investigators that the suspect followed her to her house on Friday just before 8 a.m., causing her to panic and call 911. At the same time, she armed herself as the sounds of him attempting to break into her garage reached her.
The intended victim explained to the emergency operator that the stalker was in her backyard and trying to force his way inside. That was a severe miscalculation. Dispatchers heard screaming as the terrified caller listened to him enter her home.
Neighbors then reported hearing gunshots, and several of them also called 911.
Instead, the man, identified as 35-year-old Octavio Flores Mondragon, was met by a hail of gunfire.
At least two bullets struck the suspect, one in the face and another in the chest. According to responding officers, Mondragon was located “lying on the ground inside the garage, with a pistol nearby.”
The firearm found near the alleged attacker is believed to be his. Mondragon was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Should he recover, the suspect faces a charge of felony burglary and potentially others as well.
The obviously rattled intended victim told investigators that she noticed a dark truck following her when she drove into her neighborhood. The situation became even more terrifying when the strange vehicle pulled into her driveway beside her, prompting her to rush inside and call 911.
The woman faced a nightmare scenario, and without a loaded weapon readily available, she may not have survived the attack. This situation should serve as both a warning to be prepared and a feel-good story of the Second Amendment protecting the innocent.
