Anyone who even casually follows the news knows that there is a mental health crisis in the U.S. Unexpected threats may arise at any time, even from family members, and unfortunately, it is often necessary to respond with lethal force.
This apparently was the case in LaPlace, Louisiana, where a family member last Thursday brandished a knife and threatened his relatives.
Investigators with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office believe that 51-year-old Anthony Kelly forced entry into his nephew’s home at around 11:45 p.m. Damien Keys was in the bedroom with his girlfriend and their infant child when Kelly allegedly burst in with a large kitchen knife.
Keys told officials that Kelly began swinging the knife, which left him with no choice but to grab a nearby handgun and act.
Several shots were fired, and Kelly was struck by at least one.
This ended the attack, and the uncle attempted to flee the residence. Responding officers located him on the ground several blocks away, and he was transported to Ochsner LaPlace and pronounced dead there.
It was later determined that Kelly had been in an altercation with family members earlier on Thursday. He was also reported to have a history of mental illness.
Whether this directly led to the fatal encounter that night is still under investigation. Officials currently believe that the shooting was justified and that no charges are likely to be filed against Keys.
Domestic violence situations are some of the worst faced by law enforcement, and family violence is often deadly. As the nephew in this case discovered, it is critical always to be prepared to meet a lethal threat with equal or superior force.
He undoubtedly regrets the loss of life, but with his girlfriend and small child present, it appears he was left with little choice but to respond in the manner in which he did.
