There is no instinct more powerful among good people than the need to protect loved ones — especially when those loved ones are children.
An alleged burglar ran into this buzzsaw early Sunday morning in Rancho Cordova, California. It was about one a.m., and the business owner, who lives where he works, was hosting his two grandsons aged four and 14.
The older grandchild woke his grandfather to tell him that it sounded like someone was breaking in. That’s when everything hit the fan.
The grandfather and business owner, identified only as Robert, told reporters that “all of a sudden, the guy kicked the door. Boom and boom! It was that quick.”
Acting quickly to protect his grandchildren and business, he grabbed a nearby weapon and fired. There was no chance to retreat or find another way out of the frightening situation, and Robert told investigators that the man left him no choice but to respond with deadly force.
“We’d have been dead if he would have got my gun when I pulled it out because he continued to go towards me,” Robert explained. “He wasn’t afraid of me.”
When law enforcement arrived, they found the alleged intruder deceased inside the building. The aggressor was only identified as a man in his 30s.
Robert said he did not like having to take the lethal option. “Am I upset about him? Yet. I didn’t want him to break in, but I am very happy that my babies are alive.”
Rancho Cordova Police Sgt. Amar Gandhi told local media that the break-in is part of a larger pattern, and the people are tired of being targeted.
“Residents are fed up. Residents don’t want to be a victim. Business owners don’t want to be victims anymore, and they’re taking matters in their own hands.” Gandhi added that officials are not encouraging vigilantism, “but at the same time, you have to applaud him…He did what he had to do to protect the people inside and including himself.”
