Food vendors are as much of the American urban landscape as tall buildings and taxicabs. Unfortunately, they present what some violent criminals believe to be “soft targets” and are forced to defend themselves.
One West Side Chicago vendor did precisely that just before 9:00 p.m. Friday on South Central Avenue, and an alleged robber paid for his miscalculation with his life.
Investigators believe the fatal encounter began when the alleged criminal, identified only as a male around 30 years of age, approached the vendor in an apparent robbery attempt. The street businessman was not a helpless victim but instead was a concealed carry license (CCL) holder.
Law enforcement described him as a 35-year-old male.
Windy City media reported that the alleged attacker was struck by several rounds fired by the vendor. He was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he later died.
The attacker was able to fire his own weapon, and the food vendor was also struck. Thankfully, he is expected to survive and is currently listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital.
Investigators found two weapons at the scene.
The men and women who serve big city residents through their food carts are valued members of the community. They usually represent friendly faces offering hot food to those too busy to dine in restaurants.
What they should not be are helpless victims of violent criminals who offer nothing more to society than a warning tale. This Chicago vendor knew the dangers inherent in practicing his occupation on the city’s streets and was prepared to defend himself.
The Second Amendment protects the right to armed self-defense for those great and small. Though the loss of life is not celebrated, it is rewarding to know that law-abiding Americans continue to enjoy this fundamental freedom.
