November will almost certainly mark the 64th consecutive month in which Americans purchased over one million firearms. With this in mind, who in their right mind would consider a home invasion a good idea?

It turned out to be a very bad idea for a man in Champaign, Illinois last week.

Just after 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning, a homeowner was startled by the terrifying sound of a home break-in. Thankfully he was armed and ready, and a struggle ensued with the suspect.

Multiple shots were fired as the two fought, and unfortunately the resident suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm. He was treated at a local hospital and listed in stable condition.

The suspect suffered a far worse fate.

The Champaign Police Department released a statement following the fatal incident. “On-scene, officers located two injured men and immediately began to administer emergency aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department.”

The deceased suspect was identified as 21-year-old Emmanuel Becerril-Perez of Urbana. He suffered several gunshot wounds in the struggle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed in the apparent self-defense shooting, and none are likely if the investigation does not turn up evidence that was not readily available. Police are combing the neighborhood for security camera footage and any possible witnesses.

The home invasion is one of the most violent crimes imaginable, and such an act destroys the time-honored principle of the sanctity of one’s residence. The one place where a law-abiding citizen should feel safe suddenly isn’t, and they are forced to act quickly to avoid becoming just another crime statistic.

This latest incident is a stark reminder of the necessity of being prepared at all times for the unexpected, and part of that preparedness for most Americans is having a firearm readily available.
