An alleged carjacking attempt in Florida went sideways quickly for the suspect as he is now in critical condition in the hospital.

It is a marvel that, in 2024, some still believe that carjacking an innocent victim is a good idea. Tens of millions of Americans are armed and ready for such an event, and attempting such foolishness is truly risking your life for a very minimal reward.

That was the case Wednesday evening.

St. Petersburg authorities report that the driver pulled into the Crafty Crab’s parking lot and waited in his car while his wife went inside to pick up a carryout order.

This quite ordinary occurrence was violently interrupted, police said, when a masked man jumped into the vehicle and attempted to carjack the husband.

The St. Petersburg Police Department issued a news release describing the chaotic encounter. “The victim pulled out his own gun and fired at the suspect…The suspect fled the scene, and the victim called 911 and waited for police to arrive.”

Responding officers located the wounded suspect, who was identified as 18-year-old Simon White. He was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he was described as “critical but stable.”

If the young man pulls through, he faces charges of attempted carjacking, occupied vehicle trespassing and possibly others. All for a misguided crime of opportunity with a minimal chance of success.

Millions of good people grab takeout from a local restaurant every week, and of course, they do not expect to be accosted by a violent attacker while undertaking such a common task. But the threat is real, and Second Amendment advocates correctly preach that it is always best to be prepared for the unexpected.

At the Crafty Crab in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, being prepared may have saved the husband’s life.
