Oral arguments were made last week in the legal tussle over California’s restrictions on ammunition, and the case has a high-profile plaintiff supporting gun rights.
Olympic champion Kim Rhode is at the forefront of Rhode v. Bonta, which seeks to dismantle some of the country’s most egregious ammunition laws.
She is among the most highly decorated American athletes, the only woman to win three Olympic gold medals in shooting and the only woman with two double trap gold medals.
Needless to say, the lead plaintiff is an expert on firearm issues and a staunch opponent of California’s headlong gun control push.
Among restrictions forced onto law-abiding citizens by 2016’s Proposition 63 are background checks for ammo purchases, prohibiting transporting legally owned ammo across state lines and other nonsensical stipulations.
There was good news, at least briefly, for Rhode and her fellow Second Amendment advocates earlier this year. U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez ruled the California law unconstitutional, delivering a stunning though temporary setback for anti-gun forces.
The ink on the ruling was barely dry when the Ninth Circuit stayed the decision. This kept the controversial regulations intact while the case advanced through the courts.
The plaintiffs’ attorneys correctly noted that California’s ammunition restrictions have no historical precedents, as required by 2022’s Supreme Court Bruen ruling.
The California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA), which filed the case, declared that “not once in this country’s history has the government required background checks for securing ammunition under a scheme as restrictive as California’s.”
If the Ninth Circuit abides by the law, there may be far-reaching implications for gun enthusiasts in other states burdened by oppressive restrictions.
The pattern of states such as California turning a blind eye to the high court could ultimately reach the Supreme Court, and this showdown could very well restore gun rights and eradicate such needless laws.
