A New York man faced a terrifying situation early Sunday morning when multiple intruders invaded his home. The homeowner was injured but used his firearm to successfully defend his family from the attackers.

The Rochester Police Department determined that a group, including 22-year-old Zhymar Thacker and several accomplices, broke into the residence at around 5:00 a.m.

Two adults and five children, ranging in age from seven months to 13 years, were in the home.

The family had just moved into the home the day before and was still unpacking. All seven were sleeping together in a second-floor room when the frightening commotion began.

Thankfully for the homeowner, despite the move in progress, he still had a loaded firearm ready to protect his family. The man quickly descended the stairs and found Thacker ascending toward his wife and children.

A shootout ensued.

Thacker was fatally wounded in the exchange of bullets, while the heroic homeowner was injured. He was treated and released from a local hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Rochester PD officials confirmed that no charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner who courageously defended his family. Investigators believe the man was the target of the invaders and are probing what led to the fatal shooting.

The homeowner’s gun was not legally registered, so the possibility remains that there may be a legal entanglement over the weapon.

Either way, it is fortunate for the family that a firearm was readily available despite having just moved into the new residence the night before. Violent threats may arise anytime, and it is always best to be properly prepared for the unexpected.

In the case of this young family, being prepared may have saved more than one life early Sunday morning.
