As previously noted, Florida is not high on the list of states one would automatically consider to be controlled by anti-gunners, and the reality is that it is not.

However, following the 2018 Parkland school tragedy, there was a stampede to pass anything that might have prevented a lone terrorist from carrying out a massacre.

Even if it was both ineffective and illogical.

Fast forward to 2024, and there is a renewed push to enhance gun rights by rolling back previous overreactions. If proponents are successful, the state’s expansive “red flag” law will be repealed, the legal age to purchase a rifle will be lowered, and open carry will be permitted.

A pair of Republican candidates to replace former Rep. Matt Gaetz in the U.S. House are sponsoring legislation to support Second Amendment rights and repeal previous gun control excesses.

State Rep. Dr. Joel Rudman recently filed legislation to repeal the state’s red flag law and make open carry legal for all law-abiding citizens. He declared on social media that his measure would return constitutionally guaranteed freedoms to the state.

Rudman defended his proposal as restoring fundamental rights. “Floridians should never have to trade God-given freedoms for a politician’s empty promise of security.”

One of Rudman’s colleagues, Sen. Randy Fine, sponsored a bill to lower the minimum age to legally purchase a rifle from 21 to 18. The age was raised as part of the knee-jerk reaction to Parkland.

Fine declared that the current restriction does not align with the responsibilities and legal rights enjoyed by young adults in the state. He issued a statement asserting that if these Americans are entrusted with carrying a firearm to defend the nation, they may also purchase one.

Naturally, there is intense backlash from anti-gun extremists in the legislature.

Rep. Anna Eskamani (D) slammed the proposals as “bad and dangerous policy.” She claimed that Fine was merely attempting to stand out from other candidates and support his run for Congress.

Surprisingly, there is opposition in the Florida Senate from President Ben Albritton (R). The upper chamber blocked previous attempts to enact open carry in the Sunshine State, and Albritton expressed his doubts over the bills’ prospects.

The Republican said that he “supported law enforcement my entire life” without affirming their position on enhancing gun rights. Albritton added that he stands against open carry.

The Parkland massacre galvanized anti-gunners to push through legislation under the guise of doing “something.” Seventeen people lost their lives in the shooting, and another 17 were injured.

Sadly, the typical response among many to such violent criminal behavior is to pile on even more restrictive laws that do nothing besides punish law-abiding citizens. There is predictable boasting about addressing the issue, though little to nothing is actually accomplished.

As for Florida, the state prides itself in being a bastion of constitutional liberties and freedom. Leaders proclaim to the nation that they are an example of what may be accomplished when individual rights are protected.

Unfortunately, the state falls far short of that aspiration regarding the Second Amendment. Rights afforded to citizens of many other states are not available to those who abide by the law in Florida.

Instead, they are denied open carry, are subject to red flag laws without regard to due process, and endure arbitrary age restrictions that prevent young adults from exercising freedoms they should enjoy under the Constitution.

These latest attempts to restore freedom in Florida deserve the support of every citizen who values the Second Amendment. Residents should notify their state lawmakers that they expect nothing less than a full endorsement of these restorative measures.
