There’s a reason you never hear criminals or their defenders extolling the virtues of the Second Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms works against them—and often in a dramatic fashion.
A Florida man encountered an alleged intruder Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m., and thanks to the Bill of Rights and his own intestinal fortitude, he will live to tell the tale.
Lake Wales Police reported that the homeowner was alerted to the intrusion by his dog barking. When he went to investigate the cause of the commotion, the man discovered that 34-year-old Cameron McGuire was illegally inside his home.
Investigators discovered that the suspect entered the residence through a kitchen window. It was later determined that McGuire was released from state prison in February and boasts a lengthy criminal history.”
Local media reported the suspect had “some of his child’s belongings.”
An order to freeze did not stop the suspect from allegedly continuing to advance toward the homeowner, and one shot was fired. McGuire was struck in the leg and then held at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
The suspect was treated at a hospital and then booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling and theft.
The man who defended his home is being hailed as a hero. Lake Wales Police Chief Chris Velasquez told reporters he did what any upstanding individual should do when faced with a similar threat.
“This homeowner is a law-abiding citizen and had every right to protect his family,” the sheriff declared. “Cameron McGuire should be thankful today that he is alive and in jail. Hopefully, this is his wake-up call.”
Whether being shot is indeed the suspect’s wake-up call remains to be seen. But he will remember for the rest of his life the mistake he made leading up to the encounter with a prepared citizen who valued his Second Amendment rights.
