Four-to-one odds are not great, especially when there are four attackers and one intended victim. However, the Second Amendment provided the great equalizer that all law-abiding Americans may utilize.
A man in Harris County, Texas, found himself in that unenviable situation, having to defend himself against four males aged 12-14. Despite their young ages, this Christmas morning showdown could have been deadly for the adult.
It was just after midnight when the four suspects allegedly approached their target at an apartment complex. The group reportedly was armed and demanded that he hand over his belongings.
Instead, the outnumbered man produced a loaded firearm.
Multiple shots rang out in the darkness, and three of the young males were struck by bullets. One was listed in stable condition, but the other two suffered more serious injuries.
Neighbors were shocked at the young ages of the attackers. One told local media that he called emergency services to respond without knowing the suspect was a child. “I didn’t know it was a little kid. My other neighbor came and held his [hand] and was talking to him, trying to keep him alive.”
Another resident asked the obvious question. “Of all things, being Christmas, and this is a child, first thing that comes to my mind is, number one, where is the parent? Number two, if you got here with a gun, what are you doing out here with a gun?”
There were initial reports that the youths carried BB pistols, though authorities did not confirm that. In any case, there is no chance in the middle of the night that the intended victim had the opportunity to determine precisely what type of weapons his alleged attackers possessed.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Department reported that several weapons were recovered from the crime scene.
The intended victim stayed and reportedly cooperated with authorities. The fourth child, who was uninjured, was taken into custody.
Any critic would do well to put themselves in the shoes of the intended victim. He was in no position to ask for ages and identification, and armed self-defense was the only logical response to being confronted by four individuals who apparently were apparently ready to shoot.
