Convenience and liquor stores are standard targets for not-too-bright violent criminals, but they may want to reconsider their career path and choose another line of work.

These locations are increasingly run by employees who have a healthy respect for the Second Amendment and are not afraid to defend themselves.

And now there’s an instance out of Salt Lake City, Utah, when a sharp store clerk managed to disarm his alleged attackers and gain control of their firearm before police intervened.

His act of heroism happened just after midnight on Sunday.

Local media identified two suspects as Odalys Garcia, 18, and Jimmy Gallegos, 19. They allegedly entered the store and began browsing its goods. Witness accounts report that Garcia exited and pulled their car to the front while Gallegos grabbed a black mask.

After putting it on, he reportedly asked the cost but refused to pay for the merchandise. The clerk blocked his exit from the building only to see Gallegos allegedly produce a firearm and threaten him.

A fight ensued, and employees were able to rip the handgun away from Gallegos.

Garcia, who had been waiting in the car outside, reportedly reentered the store and sprayed the workers with pepper spray to free his alleged accomplice.

Both were able to make a very brief escape to their vehicle, but police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspects.

While the wisdom of physically blocking an armed shoplifter from leaving may be debated, the store clerk was ultimately able to defend himself and wrest the weapon away from his alleged attacker. It is fortunate that authorities pulled up and apprehended the two young men before they did any more harm.

For future reference, employees may consider being armed and prepared rather than relying on their ability to disarm alleged robbers—just a thought.
