A Florida homeowner opened fire on two masked intruders Thursday evening and killed one. Now, the local sheriff is in national headlines for issuing a stern warning to all who would prey on innocent victims.

Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells held a press conference Friday to discuss the violent incident. The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, an immigrant from Mexico.

His alleged accomplice, 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella, described as an illegal immigrant from Chile, was captured a short distance away and arrested. Detectives believe there may have been others involved in the attack on the intended victim’s residence.

Wells first praised the unidentified homeowner for his quick response. “He knew something bad was about to happen, and he didn’t stall. He grabbed his firearm [and] told his wife to get into a safe spot.”

Then the sheriff issued a frank warning to those who may not know that the Sunshine State is a bastion of Second Amendment rights.

Wells added, “This is the state of Florida. If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

The dead suspect, Flores-Toledo, was arrested and incarcerated for four months in 2023 on burglary charges in Illinois. Authorities already had an active warrant out for him this week concerning a parole violation, and he was described as “armed and dangerous.”

There was no immediate word on whether the homeowner faced charges in Manatee County, but considering Sheriff Wells’s statement, that possibility seems quite remote.

Instead, he is much more likely to be hailed as a hero for defending his family and property from violent criminals. Word needs to spread quickly that it is not open season on law-abiding citizens, and the good people are well within their rights to use deadly force to protect themselves and their loved ones.
