A Florida homeowner opened fire on two masked intruders Thursday evening and killed one. Now, the local sheriff is in national headlines for issuing a stern warning to all who would prey on innocent victims.
Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells held a press conference Friday to discuss the violent incident. The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, an immigrant from Mexico.
His alleged accomplice, 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella, described as an illegal immigrant from Chile, was captured a short distance away and arrested. Detectives believe there may have been others involved in the attack on the intended victim’s residence.
Wells first praised the unidentified homeowner for his quick response. “He knew something bad was about to happen, and he didn’t stall. He grabbed his firearm [and] told his wife to get into a safe spot.”

Wells added, “This is the state of Florida. If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”
The dead suspect, Flores-Toledo, was arrested and incarcerated for four months in 2023 on burglary charges in Illinois. Authorities already had an active warrant out for him this week concerning a parole violation, and he was described as “armed and dangerous.”
