A new push to repeal the National Firearms Act (NFA) emerged in Congress this week ahead of the changing of the guard in Washington, D.C.
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) reintroduced his bid to erase the 1934 federal law that regulates the sale, possession, and transfer of certain weapons and accessories. Generally covered under the NFA’s Class III category are machine guns, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and noise suppressors.
Posting on X Monday, Burlison declared that “the ATF uses your tax dollars to violate your constitutional rights. Does that sound like freedom to you?”
The representative continued. “Gun control has always been about control, not safety. The NFA is a prime example of this, and we’re working to take it down.”
Gun rights advocates have long argued that the NFA is an unnecessary burden on upstanding citizens who are firearm enthusiasts.
For example, an individual seeking to own one of these weapons or accessories must overcome a series of federal obstacles. They must submit fingerprints and photographs, pay a $200 federal tax, undergo an extensive background check, and register the firearm or accessory with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
The Missouri Republican began his congressional career in 2023 with his first introduction of the “Repeal the NFA Act.” He further turned his sights on the embattled ATF.
In a press release accompanying the initial bill, the congressman blasted the agency for what critics believe is a systematic overreach that violates the freedoms guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
“The recent ATF pistol brace rule is just another example of the blatant attacks on the constitutional rights of Americans,” Burlison wrote. “The ATF-NFA sham needs to end.”
Advocates of the NFA claim that the law empowers federal officials to prevent violent crime. Detractors, however, charge that it is just another overreach that contradicts the Constitution.
