The right to keep and bear arms was deemed essential from the earliest days of the Republic. Even then, it was not simply the need to put food on the table that convinced the Founding Fathers of the necessity of enshrining this freedom in the Bill of Rights.
All too often, then and now, good people find themselves under attack by violent criminals. It is of utmost importance that they are not defenseless and can protect themselves and those they love.
And now, in 2025, that need is greater than ever.
This simple fact was demonstrated yet again Friday night in Phoenix, Arizona. A homeowner was stunned to find an intruder inside his residence, but thanks to the presence of a ready firearm, he lived to tell the tale.
The resident called 911 at approximately 8:30 p.m. and told the dispatcher that he encountered a stranger in his home. Officers were dispatched, but before they arrived at the scene, the homeowner called emergency services again and reported that he had shot the intruder.
Responding officers found a 51-year-old suspect inside the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The suspect’s identity was not released.
The undoubtedly rattled homeowner was taken in for questioning. He cooperated with law enforcement and was soon released after providing details of the deadly encounter.
Police officials confirmed that when they complete their investigation, the case will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review.
The loss of life is regrettable, but if the apparent facts of the encounter hold up, the defender was left with little choice but to respond to the intrusion with lethal force. He is unlikely to face legal consequences for his actions to defend himself.
No one wants to confront this situation, and no one expects it. However, it once again proved the necessity of being prepared, and for most, part of that preparedness should be having a firearm readily available.
