One of the tired but recurring themes of anti-gunners seeking to ban so-called “assault weapons” is that these semi-automatic weapons are never used for self-defense.
That charge is patently false, and it was proven yet again in a frightening and potentially deadly incident last month in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
It was just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 26, and a crowd was assembled outside the popular Dream nightclub. The raucous gathering was suddenly sent scrambling for their lives when a gunman started randomly firing into the mass of celebrants.
As panic ensued and clubgoers dove to the ground for cover, one security guard had other ideas.
He lifted his semi-automatic rifle and stood in between the shooter and his potential victims. The valiant employee then fired what appeared to be some two dozen rounds at the attacker.
The gunman, identified only as a 24-year-old male, was found by police when he turned up at a Chattanooga hospital seeking medical treatment for a bullet wound to the hand.
No one at the club was injured.
Joe Reed is the establishment’s head of security. He complimented his employee for thwarting the attack and said the business cooperated with the Chattanooga Police Department in their investigation.
“The gun was given to the police department and everything,” Reed explained. “It was quick action by our licensed security guard who did what he had to do to protect innocent lives.”
Investigators believe the attack was planned and discovered that the alleged shooter parked his car down the street from the club. He then approached the fence surrounding the building and ducked behind cars before he began firing.
Club management believes the incident will serve as a warning for anyone thinking of a similar action.
Reed told local media that “if anyone comes down here with that foolishness, they know now that Dream security has zero tolerance.”
