On the heels of Florida’s proposed “Second Amendment Summer” that would temporarily suspend sales taxes on firearms, ammunition, and accessories, Georgia is contemplating the same bold move.

Lawmakers in the state Senate passed a measure last week to waive the Georgia sales tax on weapons purchases for 11 days in October.

The party-line vote was 31-21 in favor of advancement of the bill.

Supporters of the tax holiday, which would begin on the second Friday of October, touted the measure as a way to show support for the Second Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms.

Opponents predictably resorted to emotions and trotted out instances where violent criminals misused weapons.

One, state Sen. Nan Orrock (D), blasted supporters of the sales tax pause as “tone deaf.” He charged that “it’s like taking a knife and sticking it into the heart of a parent who has lost a child. What is this blood lust for guns?”

The Atlanta lawmaker ignored the fact that there would be no holiday from already stringent requirements to purchase a weapon legally. During this period, potential buyers would still need to pass an FBI background check before obtaining a weapon.

Anti-gunners typically resort to blaming inanimate objects for the actions of deranged criminals. In turn, they would strip the right to armed self-defense from the targets of these very lawbreakers.

State Sen. Carden Summers (R) became the voice of reason in the raucous debate. He noted that virtually anything, from a pickup truck to a pressure cooker, can be utilized as a weapon by those who want to cause harm.

Sen. Tim Bearden (R), one of his colleagues, declared, “Our citizens have the right to self-defense. Our families are precious to us.”

The sales tax holiday is a great idea to show the Peach State’s support for gun rights. The opposition is little more than the usual braying of those who side with criminals over law-abiding citizens.
