Multiple news media reports assert that Kash Patel, the new FBI Director, will also be named the “acting director” of the embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Second Amendment advocates have long supported an overhaul—if not the complete abolition—of the ATF.

According to the Associated Press, the explosive information originated from a “Justice Department official.” The outlet said the source “spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the move before it was announced publicly. White House officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday evening.”

The ATF drew severe condemnation from gun rights supporters for several questionable moves over the past four years.

The agency targeted lawful gun dealers with its controversial “zero tolerance” policies. Some long-time businesses were shuttered simply for infractions of nothing more than paperwork errors.

The agency enacted controls on so-called “ghost guns,” redefined who was engaged in the weapons business, and prohibited stabilizer braces invented to enable sport shooting by disabled veterans.

Patel is expected to be sworn in as acting ATF director as soon as this week, and he will undoubtedly bring a seismic change to the agency.

The FBI and ATF operate under the auspices of the Department of Justice.

Many in Congress, including Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO), call for the closure of the ATF for abuses of its legal mandate. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) joined his call to action.

The representative released a statement denouncing the agency. “I cannot imagine under any circumstance or administration where the ATF serves as an ally to the Second Amendment and law-abiding firearm owners across America.”

It is interesting that the department will now be directly under the FBI, and it certainly raises questions about its future.

On Friday, new Attorney General Pam Bondi fired the ATF’s top legal counsel. She told reporters that Pamela Hicks led the charge against gun owners.

Bondi added that such actions are “not gonna happen under this administration.”

Hicks posted a statement concerning her termination online. “Earlier today, I was served official notice from the Attorney General of the United States that I was being removed from my position as the Chief Counsel of ATF and my employment with the Department of Justice terminated.”

She served as the ATF’s chief counsel during the past four years, the exact period when gun rights advocates charged the agency was weaponized and went rogue.

The new administration signaled its support for gun rights in early February when President Donald Trump instructed Bondi “to assess any ongoing infringements of the Second Amendment rights of our citizens.”

The White House released a statement blasting the previous administration for seeking to eradicate the freedom to keep and bear arms. “Among other infringements, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was weaponized to end the livelihoods of law-abiding small business owners in an effort to limit Americans’ ability to acquire firearms.”

Naturally, anti-gunners erupted in fury over Patel’s leadership of the FBI, and they have more to be angry about with this latest news. Brady called the new director a “known gun rights extremist.”

The organization failed to recognize that defending constitutional freedoms, including the Second Amendment, is hardly extremism.

Meanwhile, Gun Owners of America (GOA) hailed Patel’s confirmation as “a major victory for gun owners and constitutional rights advocates nationwide.”

Patel is widely recognized as a champion of gun rights, and he spoke at the GOA Leadership Summit in Knoxville last year.

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) echoed the GOA’s sentiment with a video clip showing an exuberant person in celebration. This, the advocacy group posted on X, represented “the entire gun industry” upon hearing the news of Patel becoming acting ATF director.
