A measure to provide firearm safety training for Michigan students is gathering momentum, and its bipartisan support may ensure its success.

State Sen. Jon Bumstead (R) of North Muskegon introduced a bill recently to establish optional gun safety education for public school students from 6th to 12th grades.

The course includes ten hours of essential instruction and would be taught by certified instructors. These individuals would have hunting licenses and be affiliated with local organizations.

Bumstead explained the effort that led up to his proposed legislation. “My office worked very closely with many invested parties, including the Michigan Department of Education and Department of Natural Resources, to find language for this bill that could build up broad bipartisan support.”

Indeed, Senate Bill 664 enjoys the endorsement of the MDE and DNR. Schools would not be required to provide this safety training, but they could offer the valuable resource as part of an existing class or an extracurricular course.

Bumstead believes the offering would be popular in Northern Michigan schools situated in areas with proud hunting and outdoors traditions.

At first glance, one of his allies is surprising. Detroit Sen. Stephanie Chang (D) praised the program as beneficial for all state residents.

“Firearm safety in general is important for people to learn regardless of where they are…There’s certainly a number of gun owners in my district and I’m married to a gun owner,” Change explained. “Ensuring more people have more information about gun safety is important, in addition to passing laws related to commonsense gun violence prevention.”

Chang added that the goal is to make young people with firearms present in the home aware of laws and gun safety.

The promising bill is presently in the Senate Education Committee. Michigan’s push follows similar programs to provide firearm safety instruction to students in Utah and Tennessee.
