As the Mardi Gras season heats up in Louisiana, officials issued a warning to celebrants to avoid possession of firearms—with no carve-out for those who remain sober.

Next week’s raucous celebration in New Orleans and elsewhere will attract millions of festivalgoers, and there inevitably will be some bad actors among the throngs.

However, even in a state that now recognizes constitutional carry, leaders warn against possessing a firearm around the festivities.

One, Duson Police Chief Kip Judice, issued a stern caution to those who will attend the attractions.

“People show up for these events for a family fun event where a lot of things can happen, and a person in possession of a firearm is likely to make poor judgment at that time, and that could certainly result in some enhanced criminal offenses,” Judice warned through local media.

He added that having a firearm “is a bad idea.”

One celebrant, 19-year-old Markinely Tezeno of Crowley, was recently arrested for possession of a firearm at a Mardi Gras parade. This served as a warning to even law-abiding Louisiana citizens that their Second Amendment rights disappear at many locations during this season.

Of course, gun rights advocates are well aware that there is not a good time to combine alcohol consumption and weapons. But not everyone in attendance will be walking about in a stupor, and many simply want to bring their families to enjoy the spectacle.

Louisiana recently joined the ranks of states recognizing the right to carry without government permission, but it still prohibits firearms in certain situations.

These include Carnival parades and Mardi Gras.

Concealed carry is also prohibited in establishments designated by the Louisiana State Police as “bar rooms.”

While guns and alcohol should never mix, it is a very different scenario to prohibit sober individuals from exercising their constitutional right to self-defense.
