Firearm sales in February plunged to levels virtually unseen in well over a decade. Experts note, however, that the dip is not due to a loss of enthusiasm among the shooting public.
Instead, it likely resulted from the overwhelming feeling that gun rights no longer face an imminent threat from Washington, D.C.
Raw numbers from the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) revealed that U.S. citizens purchased roughly 120,000 less weapons last month than in February 2024. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade association, noted that this represented a nine percent drop from last year.
Only February 2018 saw a lower tally of gun sales for the month in the past 13 years.
But why?
Experts chalk up the dip in firearm transactions to another “Trump Slump.” During the Republican’s first term in the White House, gun sales dropped for the first three years.
Only during the COVID lockdowns and social unrest of 2020 did these transactions rebound.
Though the new president took some steps to restore gun rights after Second Amendment freedoms being under constant attack for the past four years, he has not exactly been crusading for the cause in his first weeks back in office.
Gun industry experts noted to The Reload that Trump’s freezing of all export licensing is harming weapons exporters who were already suffering from a pause enacted at the end of the Biden administration.
The so-called “Trump Slump” isn’t the only troubling news for weapons manufacturers and distributors.
Industry giant Smith & Wesson watched its stock tumble on Friday after reporting softer-than-expected Q3 2025 sales. The gunmaker is also impacted by the White House’s pause on gun export licenses.
Smith & Wesson already warned investors that Q4 2025 results will likely be lower than last year’s.
The good news is that January marked the fifth-highest month on record for NICS background checks and the 66th consecutive month of adjusted background checks.
