Even as several states move to protect their citizens’ Second Amendment rights and block the tracking of firearm and ammunition purchases, some are headed in the opposite direction.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed another wave of gun control laws into effect last week. These included permitting Wall Street financial firms to track gun-related sales through credit card purchases.

Hochul claimed the new ability will assist authorities “to find out exactly who may be stockpiling ammunition. And this is an indicator that something untoward could be happening, so it’s an important data point for us to have.”

The importance most rabid anti-gunners place on this tracking ability is gathering intel for a national database, though most will not admit to it.

Barring a successful legal intervention, New York state retailers can now implement a specific Merchant Category Code (MCC) to record transactions. This ability will also reportedly include the means to track firearm sales that utilize credit cards.

Another one of the new laws Hochul signed into existence mandates that gun dealers must provide warnings to customers “about the risks of firearms.”

This messaging, similar to the Surgeon General’s warnings on tobacco products, is meant to address what the governor described as the “public health and safety crisis” in New York.

Still another prohibits conversion devices, generally called “Glock switches.” Federal law has already banned these devices, with possible consequences of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

That apparently didn’t mean much to New York lawmakers.

Anti-Second Amendment advocates are fond of linking unrelated issues as part of a claim of doing “something,” and Hochul is no exception. Along with the new gun control measures, the governor announced plans to spend $370 million to “reduce and prevent gun violence and strengthen communities disproportionately impacted by crime.”
