The federal government’s attitude toward gun rights continued to change last week with a landmark announcement from Attorney General Pam Bondi.

On Wednesday, she proclaimed the establishment of the Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force to safeguard further the right to keep and bear arms. This action follows the Feb. 7 executive order from the White House to restore gun rights after years of reversal.

Bondi declared her intentions in a memo to Department of Justice (DOJ) personnel. “For too long, the Second Amendment, which establishes the fundamental right of Americans to keep and bear arms, has been treated as a second-class right. No more.”

The AG asserted that the new task force will utilize the federal authority’s “full might” to protect individual freedoms.

According to Bondi, its primary mission is “developing and executing strategies to use litigation and policy to advance, protect, and promote compliance with the Second Amendment.”

Needless to say, this is a profound retreat from the all-out assault on gun rights of the past few years.

Bondi will serve as the chairperson of the new group.

In a press release, she blasted her predecessors for placing “an undue burden on gun owners and vendors by targeting law-abiding citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights.”

Civil rights advocates undoubtedly welcome the task force as another weapon in the arsenal to protect personal liberties. If the group follows through with its clear mission, many actions aimed at the weapons industry and private citizens will be challenged and ultimately rolled back.

For too long, lawmakers who claim to protect individual rights sought to dismantle the Second Amendment. As Bondi correctly noted, it is not a second-class right, but a fundamental part of the freedoms guaranteed to all by the Constitution.

Its work cannot begin soon enough.
