Second Amendment enthusiasts know that firearms are not the only tools that are integral to being prepared for the worst. A Texas woman discovered on Monday that having a handy knife can also mean the difference between life and death.

The disturbing scenario played out at a gas station in Humble, and the knife and a brilliant example of outsmarting a violent criminal saved the day.

The intended victim was only identified as Robyn, and she had stopped at a gas station to put air in her tires. Investigators watched security video footage that showed her inflating her vehicle’s right rear tire when a stranger suddenly walked past her toward the driver’s side.

She said at first she only saw him out of the corner of her eye.

The suspect, later identified by law enforcement as Shadrach Iyere, then entered her vehicle and started to drive away. The brave woman fought back by reaching in and grabbing the interior door handle.

Iyere allegedly threatened to stab Robyn, and she kept her grip on the door even as he struck her and backed into a brick sign in his attempt to get away. She told local media that she was worried that if she released her grip on the handle at that point, “I could still get run over by my own car.”

Robyn frantically told the suspect that if he would hand her purse to her—it was on the floor—she would give him money.

However, instead of pulling out a wad of cash to reward the alleged criminal with, the intended victim produced a knife she kept stashed in her purse. Iyere reportedly exited the SUV and took off on foot, but not before blowing a kiss at her and “smiling like it was nothing.”

The woman was not satisfied with simply running him off and proceeded to follow him while asking bystanders to call the police. Iyere was apprehended in a nearby neighborhood and charged with robbery-bodily injury.

It was later determined that the suspect had previous trouble with the law and was on deferred adjudication over a 2020 stalking charge.

Robyn told the media that after her alleged attacker was released on a $20,000 bond, she planned now “just to buy more guns and actually walk with them.”
