South Carolina lawmakers heeded the call of gun rights advocates last week as the House passed the Second Amendment Financial Privacy bill.
House Bill 3930, which is strongly endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA), would protect law-abiding citizens from having their firearm and ammunition purchases tracked and recorded by giant Wall Street financial firms.
Experts warn that this is an obvious first step toward a national gun registry, something every freedom-loving American should fear. The Palmetto State is set to become the 21st in the nation to safeguard citizens’ private data against such overreach.
If passed by the Senate and signed by the governor, the bill would also establish enforcement procedures permitting the South Carolina attorney general to punish wrongdoing.
Infractions could result in fines of up to $1,000 per violation.
HB 3930’s lead sponsor, Rep. Bobby Cox (R), told reporters that the goal is to protect citizens’ freedom to keep and bear arms. “We wanted to prevent anything that would infringe on gun owners’ rights.”
The restrictions would only work to safeguard privacy against these companies and would not apply to records gathered during the “regular course of a criminal investigation and prosecution.”
South Carolina is now the latest state to rise against a movement by anti-gunners that began in September 2022. Anti-gun forces suggested the creation of specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) to track firearm and ammunition sales, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) quickly agreed.
However, Second Amendment advocates responded forcefully in several states, and within days, momentum gathered to block this latest infraction against gun rights. Attorneys general from 24 states signed a letter to Visa, Mastercard, and American Express after the MCC was approved, and the mandatory tracking was retracted.
Gun rights advocates celebrated this, but California and others now require such controversial data collecting. This led states to enact their own laws against these egregious and dangerous practices.
