The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is in a state of overhaul and flux, and this is a welcome development for Second Amendment advocates.
Now comes word that a long-time top official, Deputy Director Marvin Richardson, is no more.
He was reportedly allowed to retire voluntarily or be pushed out of the door. Though opinions are decidedly mixed on Richardson’s decades-long tenure with the ATF, his departure is another step in the housecleaning that many gun enthusiasts demanded after years of the agency’s weaponization.
ATF Chief Counsel and lightning rod for gun rights supporters Pam Hicks was shown the door earlier this year as well.
The weapons industry heavily criticized Richardson for his attacks on pistol stabilizing braces, which previously were determined by the ATF to be perfectly legal. Under his watch, the agency declared handguns equipped with these popular accessories to be illegal under the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934.
He also fielded blame for the ATF’s highly controversial zero tolerance policy that stripped federal licenses from small firearms dealers for nothing more than inadvertent paperwork mistakes.
Thankfully, that policy has been repealed.
Richardson briefly headed the ATF under the Biden administration before Steve Dettelbach was brought in.
Not every Second Amendment advocacy group, including the industry trade association the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), opposed his tenure.
General Counsel Larry Keane declared that Richardson was not the reason the ATF was in the crosshairs of so many firearm enthusiasts. “My beef is not with Marvin, who is doing a decent, nonideological job.”
Just last week, U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll was given the dual role of acting ATF Director, replacing FBI head Kash Patel. There was no immediate word on the reason for the agency shakeup or whether a search for a permanent director will be conducted.
