Prosecutors in Kalamazoo County Michigan determined that Sergeant Ronald Garrett was justified in his shooting and killing of a violent suspect last October outside of a gas station in Galesburg.
Prosecutor Jeff Getting released the findings of the months long investigation on February 22nd. “The events on October 4th were incredibly tragic,” Getting said in a news release.
“They forever changed the lives of those personally involved, their families and loved ones, our law enforcement officers, and our community.”
Early in the morning of October 4th, Sgt. Garrett responded to the Shell gas station on Miller Drive and discovered the suspect, identified as 22 year old RV Johnson II of Galesburg, outside of the gas station and wielding a knife as shown in video evidence.
After a brief confrontation, Sgt. Garrett shot and killed Johnson.
Investigators also determined that it was Johnson who requested that the clerk of the gas station call 911 and spoke with dispatchers.
Prosecutors determined that Johnson posed an immediate and extreme threat of death or severe injury and that Sgt. Garrett’s belief that Johnson posed an immediate threat was both reasonable and honest.
