It is a sad day when a good citizen cannot invite friends over for a football party without fear of violent crime. Unfortunately, these troubled times mean it is critical to remain prepared, even when relaxation and camaraderie are the order of the evening.
An Atlanta man hosted a group of friends Sunday evening to watch a game. Unfortunately for all involved and particularly for the suspect, witnesses reported an armed robbery attempt.
The homeowner, only identified as “Joe,” explained to local media that two men showed up at the home, and one displayed a firearm. He told the pair to leave, and they apparently started to comply when one pointed “a barrel of a gun to my face.”
The alarming situation escalated quickly from there.
Joe reported that his roommate jumped in and was able to wrestle the man holding the weapon to the ground. “They separated, and I opened fire in self-defense.”
He emphasized that the suspect continued to have the gun in his hand and believed that the two men came with the intent to rob him.
Police were called to the scene at around 9:30 p.m., and on arrival, they found the armed suspect dead from a gunshot wound. He was described as a male in his 20s.
The investigation is ongoing, and police only confirmed that the homeowner who hosted the party fired the fatal shot. He has not been charged with a crime, and he is blessed to live in a state that honors the Second Amendment and looks favorably on those exercising their right to self-defense.
Hosting a small football party should not be dangerous, but it is critical for upstanding citizens to be prepared to respond to the unexpected. Joe was fortunate that his roommate stepped in when the gun was brandished and even more fortunate that he had his own weapon to defend himself with.
