Breaking into a person’s home is a bad idea at any time. Still, it is undoubtedly inadvisable in the late afternoon when residents are most likely to be awake and alert.

Police in Goldsboro, North Carolina, received a call Sunday just after 5:40 p.m. reporting an alleged home invader being shot multiple times by the resident. The details of the near-fatal encounter are not precise, except that the suspect is said to have broken into the home to terrorize the resident.

Authorities later identified the wounded party as 30-year-old Deshaun Jamarion James.

James left before officers arrived, but the search for him did not take long as he went straight for the medical facility. The suspect surprisingly was able to drive himself to a hospital to seek treatment for several gunshot wounds.

He was later transferred to another hospital, UNC Health Wayne, where he was listed in critical condition.

Goldsboro police released a statement confirming that the suspect was shot during the incident, but few other details were provided.

No one at the residence was injured in the frightening confrontation. Investigators confirmed that James and at least one resident at the home were “acquaintances.”

Officials described the investigation as “ongoing” in a news release.

Though not confirmed, the chances of ongoing conflict between the parties appear high with the facts released. In most cases, it is the height of foolishness to break into another person’s residence and not expect armed resistance.

Especially when they may have reason to believe that you are coming.
