Even in states where gun rights are severely limited, good people choose to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property with firearms.

Washington state gun enthusiasts have endured many recent governmental attacks on the Second Amendment, but they continue to rely on themselves and their legal weapons for self-defense.

The most recent example emerged out of Spokane, where the local Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting of an alleged car thief.

On Friday at roughly 8:40 p.m., the owner of a Jeep found that his vehicle was stolen from a residence. The adult male armed himself and went looking for his property in another car.

The missing Jeep was soon located, and not long afterward, authorities received reports of gunshots in the area. Investigators determined that the owner fired at least one shot at the suspect, who ran from the vehicle after driving it into a ditch.

There was blood left behind to indicate that the suspected thief was wounded.

The suspect did not make it far and was apprehended after reportedly banging on a residence door seeking assistance. The bloody man was taken to an area hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

His wounds were described as possibly life-threatening.

The Sheriff’s Department posted a statement on Facebook that the Jeep’s owner was detained and interviewed before being released. There was no indication that charges were pending, but the investigation into the shooting continues.

Even if the owner does not face prosecution, pursuing a car thief and shooting at them is a bad idea. Many jurisdictions do not look favorably on such actions when there is no immediate threat to the vehicle owner, and such actions may lead to costly legal battles and even imprisonment.

In the absence of immediate danger, the best idea is to let law enforcement do their job.
