An armed Corpus Christi homeowner had a harrowing encounter with an alleged intruder Thursday morning, but thanks to the ready firearm the incident has a happy ending.

The initial call to the CCPD came in just before 4:30 a.m. from a man who told the dispatcher that he was holding a trespasser at gunpoint. Then the situation escalated dramatically.

The caller said he initially detected the intruder, later identified as a 41-year-old man, in his backyard before the suspect moved to the front of his home. The unidentified resident ordered the suspect to stop, but his commands went unheeded despite having a firearm.

In fear for his life, the homeowner fired several shots. Responding officers were notified as they raced to the scene that the incident now involved a shooting.

Luckily for the suspect, a nearby fire station dispatched an ambulance to the home and rendered first aid. The man was transported to a local hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The homeowner has not been charged, and officials say the investigation is ongoing. The Nueces County District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination, though charges appear unlikely with the facts presented.

A neighbor, Lupe Orozco, said the neighborhood is normally quiet. “We have pretty good neighbors, we watch over each other, and stuff like that.”

CCPD Lt. Joshua Newman told local media that it is critically important for residents to be prepared for the unexpected. 

“Always have cameras and always have lights,” Newman cautioned. “You know anything to make it a deterrent to a criminal to even want to be on your property, is the best way. And then if you do see somebody, give us a call immediately, instead of trying to act yourself.”

Good advice, but sometimes that option is not available. More good advice is to have a legal firearm ready to act when threatened by a violent criminal.
