An alleged attacker is in critical condition after a shootout early Saturday morning with his intended victim in Chicago. This violent incident is just the latest in the Windy City in which law-abiding citizens exercised their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves from those who would do them harm.
Police reported the alleged attack unfolded at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the Englewood neighborhood.
An argument erupted at a South Side gas station between a 36-year-old man and a 49-year-old. The younger man reportedly produced a firearm from his vehicle and fired at least one shot at the other person.
That was a mistake.
The older man, who was a concealed carry permit holder, defended himself with his weapon and fired back at his assailant. The younger man was struck by at least one bullet and was transported to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
The investigation into the incident continues, and Chicago PD has not released the alleged attacker’s identity.
The last several weeks have seen a remarkable upswing in incidents where Chicago residents who are armed defended themselves and their loved ones against violent attackers. This fact has not been lost on the local media, which is wringing its hands over this trend toward self-defense.
In a city where violent criminals apparently terrorize the citizenry with impunity, is it really so shocking that the good people decide enough is enough?
The concern should be aimed at getting the lawless off the streets and ensuring the safety of the community. That is the solution that will dramatically curb acts of violence and bring tranquility to the city.
All the misguided gun control leaders can muster is not a substitute for good policing and a strong and just judicial system.
