Once a bastion for sporting enthusiasts and the Second Amendment, Colorado is steadily lurching toward becoming a state that systematically suppresses gun rights.
As the 2025 legislative session got underway, it was immediately apparent that anti-gunners had banning popular sporting rifles at the top of their agenda.
Senate Bill 3 is a sweeping proposal to prohibit all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns capable of accepting a detachable magazine, as well as gas-operated semi-automatic handguns featuring detachable magazines.
The only good news is that anti-Second Amendment forces are not ready to enact mass confiscation—at least not yet.
Tens of millions of these weapons are already in circulation across the nation, and only those who already own them will be permitted to keep them. For now.
If SB 3 becomes law, Colorado will ban such weapons’ manufacture, distribution, sale, or purchase.
Transfers of semi-automatic firearms will only be allowed to an heir, a non-resident, or a federally licensed firearm dealer.
Recent attempts to enact such a sweeping ban in the Centennial State failed, but they advanced further each session as the legislature’s makeup shifted. Indeed, the legislative chambers are now dominated by lawmakers seeking to emulate California’s gun control regime, and there is little doubt that this latest proposal will reach Gov. Jared Polis’ (D) desk for his inevitable signature.
Obviously, there is resistance from Second Amendment advocates, including Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.
In a statement, the group declared that it needs “all freedom-loving Coloradans to show up in full force next Tuesday and oppose this egregious violation of our rights.”
The NRA also vehemently opposes this new push to suppress gun rights.
Colorado’s push to join California, Illinois, and other anti-gun strongholds is only the latest attack on the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. It is increasingly evident that the U.S. Supreme Court will have the final word on these blanket prohibitions.
