Virginia’s status as a state that is evenly divided politically did nothing to slow the momentum of over 20 anti-gun proposals in the General Assembly last week. Lawmakers put forth a wish list of infringements on the right to keep and bear arms that, if passed into law, would be some of the most shameful in the nation.

The roster of anti-Second Amendment proposals reads like a wish list for those who will not rest until all guns are confiscated.

Need proof? This is a sampling of some of the more egregious bills pushed by gun rights opponents.

S.B. 848 bans young adults from purchasing most semi-automatic weapons.

S.B. 880 greatly expands so-called “gun-free” zones in Virginia, meaning that citizens with carry permits would no longer have the right to armed self-defense.

S.B. 881 attempts to end the time-honored practice of crafting one’s own firearms. Gun parts without serial numbers would be banned.

S.B. 891 established a completely arbitrary five-day waiting period for a law-abiding citizen to take possession of a weapon purchased legally.

S.B. 1134 mandates that weapons and ammunition be locked in a container, compartment, or cabinet, a gross infringement on one’s decisions in the privacy of their own home.

S.B. 1450 counters the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), a two-decade-old shield that protects the weapons industry from frivolous lawsuits that aim to drive manufacturers out of business.

H.B. 1607 institutes a blanket ban on many popular sporting rifles manufactured after July 2025. Standard-capacity magazines would also suddenly become illegal. This is simply the latest rehash of prohibitions on so-called “assault weapons” which are legally owned by tens of millions of law-abiding Americans.

And H.B. 1797 targets the right of Virginia residents to possess a weapon for self-defense by limiting the ability of Concealed Carry Permit holders to exercise their freedoms in other states.

The fight for Second Amendment rights in Virginia is only getting fiercer, and courageous advocates are needed to protect these liberties.
