The mental health crisis is real, and there are far too many instances of obviously disturbed individuals preying on the innocent. And while most are sympathetic to the plight of those with psychological issues, that sympathy does not extend to allowing loved ones to be their victims.

Authorities in Dearborn, Missouri, reported a startling incident that unfolded around 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

A man described as “partially clothed” allegedly attacked a family pet after being seen “praying” to a horse. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the suspect then attempted to force his way into the family residence, where he was then shot.

He did not survive his injuries.

Responding officers reported that they “found the suspicious person dead at the entry of the home.” The homeowner told investigators that the suspect behaved erratically before attempting to get into the home, including the spectacle of bowing to the horse.

He attacked the family dog before his threatening actions toward the family. The deceased was only described as a male in his 30s.

Due to the proximity of the shooting, nearby North Platte High School went under lockdown after the incident.  The school stayed under this condition for approximately an hour.

There were no reports of any other injuries.

It must be noted that, while the suspect appeared to show signs of a mental break, the threat he posed to the residents was apparently real. The homeowner was not a mental health professional, and their overriding concern was the safety and protection of their family.

The streets, as well as prisons, are filled with people who demonstrate psychological issues, and they deserve sympathy and treatment. But it is critically important that they are not permitted to prey on innocent victims, and the defense of loved ones always takes priority.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
