Independence Day should be set aside for counting blessings and celebrating the freedoms that come with being an American. What it definitely should not be is a day when an unsuspecting person finds themselves face-to-face with an alleged violent criminal, but that’s precisely what happened to an Arizona man and his girlfriend.
They are still alive today thanks in part to being armed and prepared for the unexpected. After all, the bad guys do not schedule when they will attack, and a national holiday could be considered an excellent time to catch people with their guard down.
Tucson media reported that it was about 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon when an alleged robber, identified as 31-year-old Freddy Wayne Batt Jr., confronted the couple and demanded that they hand over cash and drugs.
Instead, the male occupant produced a weapon and shot and killed the alleged robber.
The couple, along with two infants, then fled the scene to get help from nearby.
The man and woman have not been identified, and there have been no charges filed in connection with the shooting. Law enforcement officials report the investigation into the deadly incident is ongoing.
Again, violent crime almost always comes without warning, and bad people do not take holidays off from preying on innocent victims. While relaxing with family is a joyous occasion, it should not be seen as an invitation not to be alert and ready to defend loved ones from the unexpected.
This is the sad reality of modern life, but there is no denying the necessity of being prepared. In this frightening example from Arizona and so many others, it is the presence of a lawful weapon that protects intended victims from their attackers.
That’s the purpose and power of the Second Amendment.
