Very little of any redeeming value happens at 4 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Of course, there are first responders hard at work and night-shift employees toiling until daybreak, but most people are sound asleep in their beds.
Even so, it pays to be prepared, as one Arizona homeowner discovered last weekend. The homeowner reportedly had security cameras in place and no trespassing signs posted, but that was not enough to ward off the unexpected danger.
The central Phoenix resident told authorities that he encountered a stranger in his backyard in the early morning hours. The startling incident quickly escalated when the alleged intruder attacked him, prompting a quick and decisive response.
Thankfully, the intended victim was armed, and he wasted no time defending himself. He shot the suspect in apparent self-defense, forcing the stranger to flee.
Police arrived shortly after and set up a perimeter to catch the interloper. It worked, and the wounded man was soon in custody, undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
The suspect was not identified, and he faces a laundry list of charges stemming from the alleged attack. Police report the investigation is continuing, and no charges have been filed against the homeowner, who by all accounts acted in self-defense.
Violent criminals do not punch a time clock, and it is critically important for the good people to remain on alert even at the latest hour. Lawbreakers count on the element of surprise and potential victims being unarmed and afraid.
What they fear most is what the alleged intruder encountered in Phoenix over the weekend — a homeowner who exercises their Second Amendment rights and is courageous enough to confront the threat head-on.
That is the true solution to the violent crime plaguing the nation: an armed citizenry standing up for itself.
