Hijackings were once a thing that air travelers at least had to consider, but modern technology has essentially made that phenomenon a thing of the past. And the theft of an airplane is almost unheard of.
That was the apparent situation on Tuesday when an armed teenager stormed the Texarkana Regional Airport in Arkansas and demanded access to an aircraft. A heroic pilot ended that threat, and lives were likely saved.
Multiple media outlets reported that the unidentified 15-year-old suspect entered Signature Aviation at the local airport at around 7:30 a.m. He brandished a rifle and a handgun and demanded that he be provided with an airplane.
Employees scrambled for safety when he allegedly loaded a round. A pilot spotted the young suspect when he exited the building and headed toward the airfield.
The aviator ran to his pickup and grabbed his weapon to confront the troubled youth. The boy was ordered to the ground and held there at gunpoint until Texarkana police arrived.
Investigators found a shotgun in the vehicle they believed the teenager used to drive to the airport.
The young suspect, who reportedly was not from the area, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, attempted aggravated robbery, and making terroristic threats in the first degree.
He is currently being held at an Arkansas youth detention center.
The Texarkana Police Department issued a statement praising “the heroic act by the local pilot…The fact that this incident was resolved quickly and peacefully, despite the extreme danger presented, is highly commendable.”
Airport Director Mehrlich echoed these sentiments in an interview with KSLA. “We are very thankful that there were no injuries, no lives lost, but really it was through the actions of this pilot and by the staff at Signature Aviation that their actions saved lives.”
