Few instincts are more human than the urge to protect a helpless victim. For one Illinois woman, it is fortunate that an older gentleman stepped up and intervened when she was under a violent attack.

Winnebago County authorities were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance on Monday. On arrival, they found that an elderly man came to the rescue of a woman who was allegedly being victimized by a domestic partner.

The exact relationship between the three is unclear.

Court records indicate that 32-year-old Nathaniel Brooks was seen punching and slapping the female victim. The unidentified older man first called 911 and then retrieved a legally registered firearm to intervene.

The presence of the weapon apparently did not deter the attacker, and the Good Samaritan was left with no choice but to fire a single shot.

It struck Brooks in the buttocks and immediately ended the assault.

Investigators determined that the older man did not attempt to wound Brooks fatally, but he intended to halt the brazen attack.

The victim told authorities that she was engaged in an argument with her attacker when he first punched a wall and then turned his escalating rage on her. First responders transported Brooks to an area hospital for treatment before he was jailed.

He faces charges of aggravated battery of a woman over the age of 60 and battery causing bodily harm.

There are few actions as repulsive as attacking the elderly, the very young and the defenseless. It is always refreshing to hear of a good citizen intervening in such a heinous situation, and often the defender uses a firearm to protect the weak.

In this case, the man was in the perfect place to be a hero and did exactly what any responsible person would do. He must be commended for being prepared and courageous to step up in a dangerous situation.
