It is logical to believe that even a burglar would know when to cut his losses when confronted by an armed homeowner, but that is not always the case.

Sometimes, lessons must be learned the hard way.

A Fort Lauderdale man was startled Saturday morning at around 3 a.m. to discover an intruder in his residence. Fortunately for him, he took advantage of his Second Amendment rights prior to being faced with a dangerous situation and was armed.

But the hapless burglar, even when looking at the barrel of a gun pointed at him, did not listen to reason.

The gracious homeowner gave the alleged intruder the option to turn around and leave. That’s about as good as it will ever get for someone caught red-handed in the act of committing a felony.

Feeling threatened and that he had no choice but to protect himself when the suspect refused, the owner fired his weapon.

Fort Lauderdale Police found the wounded suspect when they arrived at the home, and paramedics transported him to Broward Health Medical Center. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The alleged intruder was not identified, and there was no immediate word on specific charges filed. Undoubtedly there will be many for the man who apparently made two terrible decisions in one night.

The first was considering it an intelligent move to burglarize another person’s residence, not knowing if they were armed and ready. This is the U.S., and the break-in was in Florida, elevating the likelihood that the intruder would meet resistance that could include lethal force.

The second was not to immediately vacate the premises when given the unexpected choice to flee or face a citizen with a firearm. Most homeowners would choose to hold the suspect at gunpoint and wait for law enforcement to come and haul him away.

Chalk this incident up to yet another lesson learned the hard way.
