There’s just no substitute for a good guy with a gun in a violent encounter. Many times, that person is a police officer who comes to the rescue of a beleaguered citizen, but there are many more armed citizens than there are police officers.
This means the odds are high that a Good Samaritan carrying a firearm may be nearby to save the day when the unexpected erupts.
Early Friday morning in Farrell, Pennsylvania, a police officer was caught in a frightening shootout with a suspect. It began with an encounter with law enforcement outside of a convenience store just after midnight when an officer discovered the 49-year-old man was armed.
The suspect reportedly refused to cooperate with instructions and instead brandished his weapon and began firing. The officer returned fire, and a bystander who was also armed came to his aid.
The unidentified shooter was struck but still refused to lay down his weapon. Both bullets and bean bag rounds were fired at him, and an armored personnel carrier was used to finally subdue him.
Mercer County District Attorney Peter C. Acker said officers reacted properly to the threat. “When you have somebody with a gun who has demonstrated that he’s willing to use it, you have to exercise great caution, which is what they did.”
The shooter was transported by emergency personnel to Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital. He suffered what were described as life-threatening injuries, and a firearm was found in his possession.
Acker lauded the effort of the citizen to back up law enforcement in a potentially deadly firefight. “He had a valid concealed carry permit; he had a gun. He went to where the police officer was and fired on the suspect.”
The citizen who assisted the officer under fire should be considered a hero, and he may have prevented a tragic loss of life. The silence in the mainstream media is deafening, and there should be praise showered onto the armed Good Samaritan who put himself in harm’s way to do what was right.
