If there’s anything more frightening than a violent carjacking attempt, it is facing this threat with your small child in the vehicle with you.

That’s what a woman in Falls Mills, Virginia, faced Friday afternoon, and the potentially deadly encounter could have ended very differently without the intervention of an armed Good Samaritan.

A man, later identified by authorities as 30-year-old Cody Dailey, is accused of approaching a woman in her truck while she was parked at a convenience store. He is charged with assaulting the victim and telling her child, “I’m going to r*pe your mommy.”

The woman screamed for help, and several people in the parking lot responded. Thankfully, one was an armed man carrying a 9mm handgun.

The Good Samaritan tried to defuse the violent encounter with loud verbal commands, but that only appeared to enrage the alleged attacker. Witnesses reported that Dailey rushed the man who intervened and shoved him to the ground.

That was a big mistake.

The defender produced his weapon and fired a shot, striking Dailey in the chest. Law enforcement was nearby responding to a different situation and converged on the scene after hearing the gunfire.

Dailey was flown to a Roanoke hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Investigators determined that the suspect was currently wanted on two outstanding warrants.

Along with the previous charges, Dailey is expected to face counts of abduction, carjacking and assault.

Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt expressed the appreciation of law enforcement for the intervention in the frightening situation. “Thank goodness for the Good Samaritans that came to the victims’ aid during her time of need. We are grateful for their desire to intercede on her behalf; had they not acted, this could have been a very different outcome.”

There are no reports of physical injuries to the understandably shaken mother and child.
