A young Texas family is safe today after encountering a frightening road rage incident on the Houston interstate Friday night. The potentially deadly encounter unfolded around 9:30 p.m.
The Houston Police Department (HPD) believes a suspect in his 40s became enraged and drove his truck aggressively through the I-610 traffic toward his intended victims.
He then allegedly targeted a 20-year-old man and his pregnant girlfriend.
Investigators determined the truck driver began recklessly “brake-checking” the young couple, ultimately forcing them to leave the interstate to get away from him. That did not work.
The truck driver reportedly pursued them and then pulled up beside the car. He allegedly shouted threats at the terrified couple and drove his vehicle ahead of them to block their escape.
The suspect then exited his truck and walked toward his intended victims with his hand menacingly in his pocket. Feeling that he had no choice, the young man opened fire through his windshield and side window.
The apparent aggressor was struck in his torso, arm, and leg. The young soon-to-be father then bound the truck driver and waited for police to arrive.
HPD investigators reported the couple were unharmed and remained on the scene to cooperate with law enforcement. The truck driver is hospitalized from his gunshot wounds and is expected to survive.
Police Lt. R. Willkens told reporters that the man who was shot is believed to have instigated the encounter. “He’s our victim, but again, more of a suspect, really. Kind of a self-defense thing.”
No charges have been filed against the 20-year-old driver who protected his pregnant girlfriend, and there is no word on charges pending against the wounded truck driver.
