When a dog eats grass, it is said to be a sign that the lovable family pet has an upset stomach. But when a person eats grass, that’s typically a warning that something is not at all right with that individual.
And when that person eats grass, attempts to break into a car and then a home by punching through the rear door glass, now we have a serious problem.
As is typically the case, this frightening incident happened in the wee hours of last Sunday morning. Around 6 a.m. to be precise, on Tiggy Duplessis Rd. in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.
This is a time, especially on the weekend, when most Americans are either asleep or cannot shake their weekday work habit of being an early riser. Either way, most are unprepared for anything more than a cup of coffee and the sunrise.
One homeowner had much more than that waiting on him.
The unidentified man was alerted that something was amiss when his car alarm went off. According to investigators, 20-year-old Kameron Serigny of Gonzales attempted to break into the car parked outside the residence, setting off the alarm.
That attempt was unsuccessful, and Serigny gave another strong indication that all was not well when he reportedly attempted to eat grass in the homeowner’s yard. Yes, grass.
Although that is not undeniable proof, it’s a rather strong clue that there were perhaps illegal substances consumed at some point during the night.
The trespasser was then seen beating on his chest Tarzan-style before he allegedly tried to punch his way through the rear door of the home. Investigators said that after Serigny struck one hole in the glass door, the resident fired a shot at the intruder.
Being shot knocked the attacker down, but he was far from out. He reportedly got back on his feet and proceeded to pummel the glass with more punches. Another shot was fired, and again Serigny went down.
But for a second time, the criminal rose and was now able to gain entry into the home by slamming his body into the nearly shattered glass. As the resident certainly feared for his life and the safety of those inside, he fired several more times.
Deputies found Serigny dead in the rear entrance of the home.
Investigators watched the horrific incident unfold thanks to several security cameras at the home. The footage confirmed the sequence of events, including the eating of grass and chest pounding.
Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit reported that evidence corroborated the account given by the defender. They also said they believe that Serigny was under the influence of an illegal substance at the time, and a toxicology report is pending.
Thankfully, the homeowner was uninjured and has not been charged.
Violent criminals are bad enough, but there is no reasoning with one that is under the influence of mind-altering drugs. In the early morning hours in Louisiana, a crazed young man apparently addled by illegal substances attacked a home in what must have been a frightening scene to witness.
Without a firearm, the homeowner undoubtedly would have been forced to wait agonizing minutes for law enforcement to arrive and somehow protect his family in the meantime. This incident could have had a much more tragic ending.
The level of preparation displayed is admirable. The car alarm alerted the resident that a break-in was occurring, and security cameras recorded the events to verify what he told responding officers.
Still, these precautions were not enough. Only the presence of a weapon and the presence of mind to use it correctly saved the family from a far worse fate. This is the Second Amendment in action, and one Louisiana home is thankful today that it was properly prepared.
