Carjacking appears to be a national epidemic, and cities such as Chicago face an alarming number of brazen attacks on innocent and unsuspecting citizens.

Unfortunately for a band of would-be thieves on the Windy City’s South Side, they chose the wrong target.

It was early Tuesday morning around 5:30 a.m. when the armed suspects approached who turned out to be an off-duty Chicago Police Department officer. Police reports confirmed that an exchange of gunfire ensued, and the officer was thankfully uninjured.

Investigators found security camera footage that showed a dark vehicle racing down South Campbell Avenue and the unmistakable sounds of gunfire. One of the suspects was seen shortly after running away.

Responding officers located the suspects’ vehicle, and it was riddled with bullet holes. The alleged carjackers were long gone from the West Beverly neighborhood, which local media cited as the home of many of the city’s police and firefighting forces.

The car was determined to have been stolen and was linked to other suspected criminal wrongdoing in the area. Investigators combed nearby streets and found multiple shell casings scattered about.

One suspect was later taken into custody but released. Chicago police have not reported any other arrests in the frightening incident.

A local civil leader, Alderman Matt O’Shea, described the officer involved in the alleged carjacking attempt as a 25-year veteran and a family man who coaches youth sports.

Per protocol, the officer is now on 30-day administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Police asked for the public’s assistance in providing doorbell camera footage or any leads to determine the suspects’ identities.

If the intended victim were an unarmed civilian, the outcome would undoubtedly have been different and very likely tragic. Instead, the alleged perpetrators got more than they bargained for, and it should serve as a warning to those who intend to prey on the innocent.
